Josh Chavis(Dudley HS/Smith HS) named new head boys basketball coach at Northeast Guilford High School

Have known Josh Chavis since back when he was playing point guard for Coach David Price, and the Dudley Panthers….Josh named the new head boys basketball coach at Northeast Guilford High School, just last week…This will be the first head coaching job for Josh in the county…He most recently has been an assistant coach for Derrick Partee, and the Smith Golden Eagles…

I can still vividly remember Josh from his playing days at Dudley…Back when Josh was a point guard, he didn’t really look to score much, until his senior year in high school…Before his senior season as a Panther, he would always look to set his teammates up…Pass first, shoot second…Then his senior year at Dudley, Josh Chavis unloaded his entire arsenal…He went to town, you might say….

Josh’ senior year, Dudley made it to the finals of the HAECO Invitational Basketball Tournament, and I think this was Dudley’s first year back in the HAECO, after going down to South Carolina for a couple of years….Josh was the best player on the court in the HAECO Championship, with Dudley vs. Greensboro Day School…Josh wheeled and dealed his way to almost carrying Dudley to the title….

Now it was Josh Chavis, who played his college basketball at University of South Carolina-Upstate, alongside former Northeast Guilford star Mezie Uzochukwu…Josh Chavis and Mezie Uzochukwu faced off when they were in high school, with Dudley and Northeast Guilford being in the same conference, the Triad 3-A Conference back in those days, with Dudley, NEG, Smith, Northern Guilford, Rockingham County, and others…Chavis and Uzochukwu did not go head-to-head, because Josh played the point for Dudley, and Mezie was a post player for the NEG Rams…

One season, and I was there for this one, Northeast Guilford, coached by Curtis Hunter, traveled all the way to East Carolina University, there in Greenville, N.C. to play the Dudley Panthers, coached by David Price…This was for the NCHSAA 3-A East Regional Championship, and pretty sure Josh and Mezie Uzochukwu were going at it in this big game…

And we get the news today, from Bryant Roche, over at the News and Record, with the big spread in the Sunday N&R, that Josh Chavis has replaced Curtis Hunter, as the head boys basketball coach for the Northeast Guilford Rams…Looks like a ready-made move…NEG has not really been relevant since back when Mezie Uzochukwu was playing for the Rams…

from the N&R piece/post by Bryant Roche:
Chavis replaces Curtis Hunter, who compiled a 240-233 overall record with two regular season conference titles, most recently in 2014, and four conference tournament titles, most recently in 2013, in a 19-year tenure dating back to May 2005. The former North Carolina A&T head coach guided the Rams to NCHSAA 3A regional runner-up finishes in 2006 and 2010, with the 2006 team losing to a Dudley squad led by Chavis at point guard.

The Rams haven’t had a winning record since the 2013-14 season. In 2023-24, they finished 7-17 and were 4-10 in the Mid-State 3A Conference to place seventh in the eight-team league.

Part of the toughest job for Josh Chavis, will be keeping the top NEG Rams talent playing basketball, at Northeast Guilford High School…At the conclusion of this year’s 2024 Guilford County Boys Middle School Basketball Championship Game, won by NEG Middle over Southwest Guilford, 48-45 in Double Overtime, the top two Northeast Middle School players, Brennan Foster, and Jamari Shepherd told us that they were headed to Smith HS next season, and they would join the Golden Eagles, coming out of the Smith Academy….Foster the point guard, and Shepherd on the wing and in the post…Foster with 13 points in the Championship Game and Shepherd with 10 points, to lead the NEG Rams to the Title…..

  1. Maybe I missed it, but have you had anything on Evan Fancourt taking over as AD at Grimsley when Ethan Albright steps down in June?

  2. Have heard rumblings but no verification on that one….Will seek out the info and see what we come up with on Monday….
