UNCG Softball Advances to Championship Game with 5-4 Victory over Chattanooga
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team, seeded second in the 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament took down the top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs on Friday with a 5-4 win at the UNCG Softball Stadium in the semifinal round.
With the win, UNCG will play in their ninth SoCon Championship game in program history, and eighth in Head Coach Janelle Breneman’s time at the helm.
The Spartans, as the visitors, began the game stranding two runners on base and then retired the Mocs in the bottom of the first as they left one on.
In the top of the second, Jessie Shipley led off with a walk. Chattanooga retired back-to-back batters, but Tori Dalehite followed with another walk and Maycin Brown doubled down the right field line to drive in Shipley for a 1-0 advantage.
Chattanooga was able to respond in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on five hits for a 3-1 lead.
UNCG bounced back with a four-run inning in the top of the fourth to regain the lead, 5-3. With one out and runners on second and third, Brown hit her second double of the game tying the game, 3-3. Following the Spartans’ third walk of the inning, Betsy Eatmon moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt and Jorde Chartrand drove the ball out to left center for the two-run lead.
The Mocs cut the deficit to one with a solo home run from Acelynn Sellers in the bottom of the frame, 5-4. Chartrand came in relief and retired the final two batters of the fourth which started a string of nine-straight outs for the junior, which included four-straight strikeouts.
The Mocs stranded one runner in the top of the seventh, as UNCG secured its spot in the 2024 SoCon Championship game with the final two outs as Chartrand earned her second save of the season.
