Late Surge Sends Baseball to Run-Rule Victory Over Samford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won 14-4 in eight innings against the Samford Bulldogs in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
With the win, UNCG improved to an overall record of 30-18. It marks the 19th time in the program’s 34-season history that the Spartans have won 30 or more games. They last accomplished it during the 2022 campaign (34-30).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs broke into the score column first on Saturday in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead when Lucas Steele tripled off the wall in right-center to score a pair of runs.
UNCG responded to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third and later tied it at 2-2 in the fourth. Aidan Brewer plated the first run with an RBI single up the middle in the third that scored Mitchell Smith. Then with one out in the fourth, Jacob Dilley lined a single up the middle to score Luke Holland.
The sixth inning saw Trey Truitt score a pair when he hit a two-out double down the line in right, which gave the Spartans a 4-2 lead.
The Spartans ran away with the ballgame during the seventh inning, scoring seven runs on three hits with help from one error to take an 11-2 lead. The scoring began with Brewer scoring on a throwing error following a fielder’s choice. Luke Jenkins then singled to center to score Holland and was followed up by Smith singling through the left side to score Truitt. By batting around in the inning, Brewer came back up later in the frame and capped the seven-run surge with a three-run double down the left field line.
After Samford scored two runs in the top of the eighth to cut it to 11-4, the Spartans scored three more runs in the eighth to secure the victory via the 10-run rule. Zachary Walsh tripled to right to score Dilley for the game-clinching hit that made it 14-4 and walked it off for the Spartans.
