UNCG Softball Falls to Chattanooga in SoCon Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The second-seeded UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to the top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs in game one, 5-0 forcing a winner-take-all game. In game two, the Mocs claimed the 2024 Southern Conference (SoCon) title behind a 9-5 victory.

Fifth year Maycin Brown and junior Jorde Chartrand were both named to the SoCon All-Tournament team.

GAME 1: UNCG 0 – Chattanooga 5

After four scoreless innings of a pitcher’s duel for both teams, Chattanooga took advantage in the bottom of the fifth. Following two fly outs, the Mocs saw Jayce Purdy single and Acelynn Sellers hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. On the first pitch, Anna Dovey hit a home run to left field to give Chattanooga a 3-0 lead.

UNCG saw its sixth base runner of the game in the top of the sixth, but was unable to capitalize.

The Mocs added to their lead in the bottom of the frame, as Kaili Philips doubled to left center with no outs to drive home Abby Orr and Olivia Lipari for a 5-0 advantage.

With one final chance at the plate, the Spartans were unable to string together hits as the Mocs forced a winner-take-all game with a 5-0 victory.

GAME 2: UNCG 5 – Chattanooga 9

The Spartans put the first run on the board on Jessie Shipley’s sacrifice fly to left center scoring Maycin Brown from third, 1-0.

The Mocs saw their first base runner in the bottom of the frame, but UNCG kept them from scoring. Chattanooga put two runs on the board each in the bottom of the second and third for a 4-1 lead.

UNCG chipped away with two runs in the top of the fourth cutting the deficit to one, 4-3. The Spartans walked in their second run with the bases loaded, and then Maycin Brown hit a fielder’s choice that scored Madelyn McKinnon from third.

Chattanooga saw Phillips and Addy Keylon hit solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to three, 6-3. With another three runs on four hits, the Mocs saw a 9-3 advantage in the bottom of the sixth.

With one last go-around, UNCG saw a walk and a double to put runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh. Brooklynn Maxwell singled through the right side to cut the deficit to 9-4. With one out, Chartrand singled up the middle driving in another run, 9-5, but the Mocs retired the side to secure the win.
