More on this game on the way….
Dudley got off to a good jump start versus the East Lincoln Mustangs…The Mustangs had some height with 6’5 guard Jaxson Dollar and their big man, 6’7 Jackson Fannon…To Dudley’s liking, Fannon liked to set up and shoot outside, more than he liked to work inside…Dudley was getting some very key rebounds early in this game, and then again late in the game, with Kameron McNeil and Zion Nichols working as the key rim protectors on the offensive and defensive boards, and there on the defensive boards is where McNeil and Nichols proved to be most productive….Nichols will pleasantly surprise you by how well he rebounds the basketball…
Dudley is still missing Andrew Rogers and Jerron Blackwell, two other very effective rim protectors who were/are injured, and Rogers played back in December and some in early January, but Blackwell became out-for-the-season, after his football injury suffered during Dudley’s playoff game at JM Robinson…Dudley is surviving nicely right now going with five-man rotation that includes CJ Jones, CJ Neely, McNeil, Nichols, and Lishawn Speller….
That trio of guards, with Neely, Jones, and Speller is really doing a super of job of giving Dudley a chance to win every game they play…Jones connected on four 3s on Friday night against East Lincoln, but I don’t think Carlos Neely even attempted a three point shot…Neely has that knack for getting to the basket and he is one of top penetrating guards in the state…Speller is like a light weight boxer who just won’t go down, and you will not get Speller down, he keeps on coming at you, with arms and and legs extended and he covers a lot of territory…The kid is fearless, and he gives you a look of, “I don’t care what you are trying to do, you won’t get it done on me”….
Neely has become so smooth and patient as he runs the Dudley offense, and you can have any of those three, Neely, CJ Jones, or Speller manning the point, all three can handle it…Neely seems to be the most equipped for the guard leadership role…Neely keeps that offense in place like he is a tube of Glue…Keeping it all together and Neely attacking the basket/rack and getting to the rim at just the right moment and finishing his shots…If Neely doesn’t finish his shot, there is a very good possibility that he was fouled…And he will get to the foul and convert most of his Free Throws, he is at 61% made Free Throws for the season, and as a team, Dudley is shooting at a 62% clip at the FT line…
CJ/Courtney Jones leads the Dudley Panthers in scoring at 19.3 ppg, and he is just shy of 20 per game, while he hit for 17 points, with those four 3s, two 2s and a Free Throw thrown in for good measure vs. the Mustangs, of East Lincoln….Thirteen points for Neely in the first half on Friday night, and eight for Jones, and then Neely goes off for 10 pts. in the second half, while Jones knocked down 9 pts. The big shot for Dudley in half Number Two was Speller, who hit for all of his 11 points in the game, after the break for intermission/halftime…
Dudley led by 16 points after three quarters/periods, and then the Panthers withstood a charge by the East Lincoln Mustangs in the fourth quarter and Dudley then wrapped up the contest, winning by 12 points…And you have to like the way the Dudley Panthers are playing now that the Playoffs are rolling…Dudley rolled to a big win back on Tuesday, and the Panthers never trailed in the game vs. East Lincoln, on Friday night at the CBG/Chester Bradley Gymnasium…In the end, and really the entire game in this one, it was like Public Address announcer Skip McCall used to tell and inform us, “It’s Panther Time, It’s Panther Time, It’s Panther Time, and it WAS on this Friday night….
Those guards out front running that ball-movement weave, and then CJ Neely and CJ Jones becoming drivers and slashing into the lane, and at times when the defense would come with help and two men would be on Jones and Neely, they would simply pass the ball to Kameron McNeil and he would go hard to the hole, or often times he would make the “Extra Pass” and hit a streaking Panther like Speller or Nichols coming hard down the baseline, and they would convert the bucket for Two…McNeil is a very good facilitating Post Passer….
Dudley made East Lincoln work extremely hard to get their shots off, and Dudley’s quickness on Defense forced the Mustangs to suffer through a tough night at “The Chest”/the Chester Bradley Gym…One more Panther I need to give a few props to, is Kohi Strickland…Strickland comes in off the bench, and he gives Dudley an extra strong body out there, and Strickland will get called for some fouls, but when he gets his fouls, they are working fouls…Strickland is always working, and he is working on both ends of the court/floor…You are going to have to respect his defense, because he is coming at you…Dudley is coming and when I got the chance to talk to a few of the Panthers after the game, I asked CJ Neely how his brother Xavier was doing…We used to call Xavier Neely, “The X-Man”, when he played for Western Guilford Middle School, and later on he played for the Smith Golden Eagles(Xavier and CJ played together one year, while at Smith HS)…Always good to get the check-up word on Xavier Neely…Also talked with CJ Jones about his playing days, back when he was with the Allen Middle School…Also there at about the same time was, Kalecia DeBerry, who is now at Smith HS…
A final thought that hit me, as I was driving home from the game was, “If You Can Hit a Free Throw, you can play basketball for the rest of your life”…I got to thinking about the old days on the outdoor basketball court, and I bet many of you remember these times too…If You Hit the Free Throw, you were in the game…Remember the old saying, “Let’s Shoot for Teams”…And we proceeded to make a Free Throw, and if you did you were in the game…I could always hit a Free Throw, so I would for sure be playing in the next game…The old saying, “Let’s Shoot For Teams”, really stays with me…And like I am just saying, “If You Can Hit A Free Throw”, you can keep playing basketball for the rest of your life…Almost like the old outdoor basketball game condition, and this one sometimes might make for a Quick Game…The old condition was, “MAKE IT, TAKE IT”….Lots of good memories and lots of good days on the ole Outdoor Basketball Court…Sunday if for Church, and for going to the Outdoor Basketball Court late in the afternoon….Let’s keep playing until we are 90 years old, what do you say?????

What happened to Andrew Rogers? I remember Blackwell being hurted against J.M. Robinson. Is Rogers coming back?
Shoot me if I am wrong, but am Thinking Rogers got hurt in the first Dudley at Smith game, and they were taking players off the court with injuries like crazy that night….Cramps and all kinds of injuries…Not sure if he(Rogers) will be back this season….If you get a chance, listen to the interview with Coach Burney, and I believe he did shed some light on the subject of the injuries…..
