Three blowout shutouts took place for the games the Rockingham County high schools competed in. Walkertown put away McMichael, 60-0, Reidsville clinched a piece of the Mid-State Title with a 57-0 victory over BY, and Rockingham County scored a 29-0 victory over Carver.
McMichael took their worse loss of the year with a 60-0 defeat at the hands of Walkertown. The Wolfpack, a 6-1 team near the top of the ranks of the 3A, improve to 2-1 in the conference, while the Phoenix fall to 0-4 in the conference and 2-6 overall.
With their fifth loss in a row, McMichael needs to pick up a win to break that streak when they face Bartlett Yancey on the 24th. McMichael, at 0-4 in the conference, needs to defeat BY to ensure that they are not the seventh-ranked team in a conference of seven. After the Bartlett Yancey game, they will face Reidsville, and after that, they would possibly be in the postseason, but it will be difficult to make it without that BY win.
Morehead enjoyed a bye week this week following an up-and-down season that started with five losses, featured back-to-back wins, and then saw a 55-0 loss to Reidsville last week.
To cap off the season, Morehead will stay put in Eden as they take on Rockingham County and Walkertown. They are 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference, but coming in to today’s slate, they seemed to be squarely in playoff position. Unless a whole lot changes, Morehead will be participating in November football, but they still will vie to finish strong against those conference opponents.
Reidsville continued their steamroll of conference competition in Caswell County when they demolished Bartlett Yancey, 57-0. BY has been reeling ever since their first win of the year, and Reidsville has been rolling ever since losing to Reagan in early September. In their past three games, which have all been shutouts, they have averaged over fifty points per game.
Reidsville, who came in to today sitting atop the 4A RPI and in position for a number one seed, will take a bye week. After that, they will take on McMichael on Halloween. Reidsville has officially gained a share of the Mid-State Conference Title, and they will claim it for certain if they defeat McMichael in two weeks.
Rockingham County controlled the entirety of the game against Carver, winning it 29-0 in the end. This improves their conference record to 3-1 and second in the Mid-State as they approach their final game of the regular season, in which they will face the Morehead Panthers.
RCHS was hovering around a first round home playoff game before this win, and now, thanks to Carver’s impressive record and the win itself, Rockingham County could be very likely be playing in Wentworth in November.
The following are the Mid-State Conference standings, the conference which Reidsville has almost certainly become the champion of. There is no conference championship game and it is solely based on win percentage in conference games.
1. Reidsville (5-0 conference, 7-2 overall)
2. Rockingham County (3-1 conference, 4-4 overall)
3. Walkertown (2-1 conference, 6-1 overall)
T4. Carver (2-2 conference, 6-2 overall)
T4. Morehead (2-2 conference, 2-6 overall)
T6. Bartlett Yaneey (0-4 conference, 1-7 overall)
T6. McMichael (0-4 conference, 2-6 overall)
Next week, as Reidsville takes a bye week, McMichael will play Bartlett Yancey as each team searches for its first conference win, Rockingham County will take on Morehead in a Rockingham County rivalry game, and Walkertown and Carver will also go at it in a Forsyth County rivalry game.
