from Mike Fanning, for GreensboroSports.com:

The Grimsley Whirlies (11-0) left no doubt about their playoff readiness Friday night, dominating the West Cabarrus Wolverines 42-7 in the second round at Jamieson Stadium. But the true story of the night was the triumphant return of quarterback Faizon Brandon, who had been sidelined since the first game of the season.

Brandon quickly reminded everyone in the packed stadium that his injury and time off were firmly in the past. On the very first play from scrimmage, the 5-star signal-caller dropped back and unleashed a perfect deep post to wide receiver Kaden Catoe, hitting him in stride for a massive 70-yard touchdown reception. Just 15 seconds into the game, the Whirlies led 7-0.

With Brandon back at the helm, Grimsley wasted no time proving why they are the top seed in the 7A state playoffs. The Grimsley offense was utterly unstoppable for the entire first half, scoring touchdowns on their first six possessions to build an insurmountable 42-0 advantage.

Following the initial explosion, running back Ty Shoemake took over on the ground, powering in for his first touchdown from 3 yards out. The defense then forced a key turnover on an interception thrown by Wolverines quarterback Johnta Harrison, setting up the Whirlies for another quick strike. Brandon found Hudson Cooper for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Shoemake found the end zone again before the first quarter concluded, making the score 28-0 heading into the second quarter.

The punishing ground attack continued early in the second quarter. After a West Cabarrus punt, Shoemake found pay dirt again, completing his hat trick of rushing touchdowns. He was highly productive in the first half, finishing with 74 yards on 8 carries and 3 scores. The Whirlies were not done yet, as Brandon connected with Catoe one last time from 6 yards away to push the lead to 42-0 as the first half neared its close.

West Cabarrus finally managed to get on the board right before halftime. On a drive featuring three key first downs, Johnta Harrison rumbled in from 20 yards away for the Wolverines’ lone score, making the halftime margin 42-7. The Grimsley defense contained West Cabarrus effectively throughout the half, forcing four punts and securing one interception on the Wolverines’ six drives.

With the running clock in effect for the entire second half, the game quickly wound down, with neither team able to add to the score. Brandon’s spectacular, albeit limited, performance concluded at halftime; he finished the night 12 of 14 for 227 yards and 3 touchdowns. Catoe was his main deep threat, catching 4 passes for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns. Khyan Battle led the team in receptions with 5 catches for 62 yards, and Hudson Cooper added 3 catches for 47 yards and a score.

The Whirlies now advance to the third round, with their offense looking more dangerous than ever with a healthy Brandon leading the way.
