  1. Congrats to Freddy and his staff..Well deserved..GDS has been a strong program for many years, and it has much to do with the coaches, teachers and it’s student athletes..

    Go Bengals!

  2. Congratulations to the GDS coaching staff. I have said for the last 5 years that GDS has the best coaching staff in the state. The knowledge and experience that is on that coaching staff is way above any other in the state. Evidently there are other people that think they are good also. Jeff Smith is a great defensive coach and could easily be at the college level and Steve Shelton has a great offensive mind while Freddie puts it all together. Again congratulations.

  3. from the Greensboro Day School:

Johnson to Coach in National Game

Greensboro Day School basketball coach Freddy Johnson will lead the East Team in the 2013 McDonald’s All-American Game. The game will be held April 3 in Chicago and will air on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. Johnson will be assisted by his current assistant coaches, Steve Shelton and Jeff Smith.

With over 860 wins, Johnson holds the North Carolina state record for most wins by a high school coach, public and private. In his 36-year coaching career, he has 21 conference titles, seven state championships, and 17 Coach of the Year awards.

Since 1978, more than 1,100 players have competed in the McDonald’s All American Games, forming an elite list of some of the top names in basketball history, including Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker and Maya Moore. This year’s East Team roster can be viewed by clicking here.

  4. I’m not a fan of all the transfers in local high school basketball – either public to private or private to private, but this is likely to have a ripple effect for years to come. I imagine there are lots of mid to high level players and their families in the local and regional area that will consider this coaching honor when making their high school decisions. High school basketball in the Triad area probably just got kicked up a notch but I hope it doesn’t turn out to be a negative with increasing numbers of transfers as other schools feel they may have to keep up.

  5. Congrats to Coach Johnson, Coach Shelton, and Coach Smith. A great honor for you guys, GDS, all of the players that have played for you and Greensboro/Guilford County.

  6. This is all good for GDS and the Greensboro area. I hope it does bring more top basketball players to our area to play at GDS or other area schools. It is great for our area kids to see and experience the play of the older high level players that our area has produced over the past 5 plus years. I am sure the high level of play that is occurring at GDS, WES, HPC, New Hope Christian and Quality Education will help launch new breeds of future high level players that nobody really knows today.

  7. I have enjoyed watching the GDS teams over the years. It is nice to see someone from our area picked. Congrats to the GDS staff.

  8. This one of highest honors to ever come across the board in Guilford County basketball…

Congratulations to Coach Johnson, Coach Shelton and to Coach Smith on being selected to coach in this game….
