Really surprised not to see Austin Hendley name from HP Christian as a K/P. I watched there games last year and a couple this year. This kid is like 6’3 250 as a kicker!! Probably 99% of his kickoffs go through end zone. Even seen one go through goal post. I don’t know his average on punts but he had a 60 some yard punt a few weeks ago in the air, without the roll. They don’t punt much anyway. Don’t know how these teams are chosen but maybe private schools aren’t eligible. Probably like other sports private school kids get left out. Has Clemson blood line , dad was kicker for Clemson national Championship team and his uncle is Lucas Glover pro golfer from Clemson. May see him in Orange next year. I know the kid and know he has worked hard and he deserves recognition, because he is really good. That’s my soap box .
Yes this game does not include private school players, and public only….
We the kid up at the Shane’s Rib Shack last Fall for an interview and real good kid with real good blood lines, that is for sure…

There’s a camp that you go to and try out for this – lots of kids can’t or don’t go and a lot of good players not on the list.
Viking Fan, there is not a camp for this. Select student athletes get an invitation to go to a combine and there are a few dates that are extended at specific locations. Kids can’t just attend because they want to.
In 2016, there were 3 SC shrine bowl combines and 5 NC combines, all of which were open to the all rising seniors.

Cardinal Gibbons is private and has a player on the roster.
@McFly Players have to come from NCHSAA member schools. Cardinal Gibbons is; High Point Christian isn’t. Hence Hendley not being eligible for the game.
J.D. Springer is right on/spot on….You have some private schools that play in public school conferences within the NCHSAA and they would be eligible for the Shrine Bowl roster/team…
Your school would have to be member of the NCHSAA to be eligible for the Shrine Bowl team/roster…
Charlotte Catholic has been in there for many years and in more recent years you have had Cardinal Gibbons and Bishop McGuinness get on board….
You have to be a member of the NCHSAA to be invited and Charlotte Catholic and Cardinal Gibbons are both 4-A’s and I think Bishop has remained a 1-A-size school…Gibbons just recently moved up to the 4-A ranks in an attempt to play tougher competition….
Some of the schools down and Raleigh and in Wake County were trying to refuse to play the private schools, hence Cardinal Gibbons and that created a whole new animal of a different color there….
Wake County and Mecklenburg County both adopted a rule that there public schools can not play any private schools that aren’t associated with NCHSAA. Mecklenburg went a step further 2017-2018 it is my understanding they will not even be allowed to play in any holiday tournaments, invitational , etc. that private schools are in also- with the potential of having to play a private school in the tournament. This is on top of scheduling any non conference games during regular season, that started last year in Mecklenburg. This info came from a friend of mine that coaches at Charlotte Independence. Public schools are so worried about private schools taking their athletes. That will be a never ending argument. Probably wont be long before Guilford and Forsyth adopt that rule. A lot of the principals and AD’s have adopted that rule with their individual schools already.
Not allowing private school kids to play in the Shrine Bowl , is that not discrimination? We had to allow transgender bathrooms because they said they were being discriminated against. This is not different than color, sex , aka- gender identity. Just because I go to a private school means I’m not eligible to be selected to an all star game. I think if the right person and lawyer get a hold of this they may have a case.
